About us

Faction is a boutique-style studio in Vancouver, Canada that specializes in creating seamless visual effects for film, television, and the gaming industry. We are comprised of a handful of artists, each specializing in their respective craft. Faction is located in the heart of Gastown (a hub for like-minded artists).

Chris van Dyck is a Vancouver-based VFX artist in the commercial, film and television industry. Specializing in digital compositing, he has worked at some of the top studios around the world: Frantic Films, Rising Sun Pictures, Animal Logic, Rainmaker, Zoic, The Embassy, and Technicolor. Working primarily as a contractor, he has held various roles, including Senior Compositor, Lead Compositor, 2D Supervisor, and Visual Effects Consultant. He has supervised and brought to on-time completion complex projects of more than 200 shots and managed teams of up to 16 artists. Throughout his career, Chris has developed his strengths in Autodesk Flame, Digital Fusion, and Shake. Over the last 6 years, he has worked on the following projects: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Ironman, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Frank Miller's 300, Superman: Returns, Night at the Museum, Blades of Glory and G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.

Most recently, Chris has been collaborating with some of the major players in the video game industry to help achieve high end feature film effects for in-game cinematics and video game trailers. He was the Supervising Compositor on Prototype's award-winning trailer (Spike TV: Best in Show) and Need for Speed: Underground's most recent trailer for EA.

Chris has also conducted lectures for Siggraph and the Art Institute, been published by Digital Fusion on the topic of Digital Compositing, and published by Siggraph on the film industry in Vancouver. Chris is currently teaching Digital Compositing at VanArts.

Ian Kirby is a director, producer and VFX artist with extensive experience in all mediums of the film and television industries. His background in 2D animation, design, compositing and colour grading, combined with an extensive knowledge of delivery formats and production, enables him to undertake and manage a broad spectrum of projects.

Ian was the co-creator of Broken Saints, a unique web-based animated graphic novel, which he animated and sound designed. This project was seen by millions around the globe, won an award at the Sundance Film Festival, and was eventually released through Fox Searchlight. Ian is the Founder and President of Sequence, a Vancouver-based design and animation company. He has successfully developed and managed the rapid growth of the company, which currently has a client base that ranges from Canada to Europe to the US.

Recent projects include producing, directing and editing motion comics for Warner Brother's "I Am Legend" and "Batman: Black and White". Most recently, Ian directed select episodes of "Terminator Salvation - The Machinima Series".
